The unforgettable Croatian Reverie!!

We all have a "list of things" to do in our journey. The most common one in all of our lists is to travel, tracing a wish route to make our holiday magical.
When you pick a map of Europe and hover your iris around the most famous places, its likely that Croatia would get its undeserved ignorance. well, Time has been talking to me whispering into my ears to not to keep Croatia waiting. Croatia is a piece of land paninted by God when he was apprently in good mood.
Me and my friend zeroed in on Zagreb and Plitvice lakes for this time.

As we catapulted ourselves from Brussels, Zagreb invited us solemnly with its vivid panache. First observaton is that the city is prim proper and clean dapper.
We booked hostel Subspace near the old town and occupied what they called capsules. The concept was totally cool.

Inside my Capsule

Had a delightful lunch and headed back to freshen up. We had no fixed list of places to see but to stroll every possible street in the city. Thick beautiful sunlight with colorful outpour of attitude gave a thump to our excitment.

Zagreb is more real in the sense, it is not prepackaged with attractive tour packages or unnecessary hypes that pollutes the very fabric of the place. I had very little expectations from Zagreb but I was bewildered with its artistic grace. It took us by surprise.
A patch of desire catalysing our blend with the atmosphere, to become part of breeze that keeps blowing to all the streets, we roamed loosing track of time. In the streets, follow your curiosity and you will be rewarded. We got pulled into unknown unruffled lanes, Its just the way how Zagreb unfolds to visitors. Small unexpected delights is the teasing generosity of this city.

Lower town has meuseums and newer stuff while the upper town has the old quaint chruches and buildings. We moved around Gornji Grad covering Zagreb Cathedral, St. Marks Cathedral and Lotrscak tower.

It was wonderful to simply chat and walk clicking pictures, taking a break sitting in street corners. Not to forget ice cream break, delicious.
I never felt so comfortable with a city that I travelled to.

Tkalciceva!! good luck wih the pronounciation. It's a paradise. There are endless number of restaurants in this street and we had nice little time in one of them. As sun gets thin, lot of musicians, of different Genres perform at different parts of the street.

The fun filled holiday attitude and style being so conspicuous all around the street leaves everyone floating in delightful ambience.
Be it the Spanish tempo that made people dance on streets, or the old man's swag with cigar and guitar, smoking it out or bands with bass, saxophone and violin or the band with loads of beautiful songs, the street is an unforgettable experience.

We just sat there people watching and listening to music in inevitable deep reverie.

Back to the capsule. The only excuse that this day can give for ending so quickly is that, time has Plitvice in store for us tomorrow.
Alarms, Quick showers, Taxis and into the bus at 6:30AM.
This was the USP for our trip and we were curious to explore the largest national park in Croatia. There are 6 trails if my memory serves me right, a 8km hike is what we picked from entrance 1. With a bit of fresh forest air, place starts to bombard you with its distinctness.Paths are laid out throughout giving you clear views of lakes. Perfect sunny weather, Azure sky, turquoise waters is as pretty as it can get.

You feel as though land is scooped out and waters keep filling the cup making it look dramatic. Unable to escape from the rage of beauty and equally hungry we sat in the middle of trees in plain old benches and had a relaxed brunch.

A short ferry ride took us to explore much more better parts of the place.

Whenever we see lot of people recommending a place to visit, somewhere deep down we begin to suspect- is it really so good. The next few kms that we walked rewrote the thought of smug facade that I had in mind about Plitvice lakes.
Crystal clear waters letting us see the flora that it beholds, truly imaginary paths cutting through endless lakes on either sides, swept my feet to fall for it.

Some where, some time when I was half asleep, when I was half awake and I don't even know whether it is my imagination or a dream, you get flashes of pictures, which may probably never exist....nature had its own strange way of acknowledging it by making me come here.

Inch by inch we came to the end of the hike closing it with a short bus ride to the entrance 2.

Having gone through a splendid day, we reached Zagreb and this is where the sting in the tail starts. We went for a exchange of currency and reached tram station. Tram arrived and as we were getting into it, my friend for some reason looked into her bag. She uttered "wallet is missing, someone stole my wallet", a pause and then comes the bomb, "Our passports are in the wallet". No no i dint hear what i just heard.I came out of the tram and we looked around, She totally lost her cool and who wouldn't. Too many things coming to my mind and i simply told myself and to her to keep calm and focus on what needs to be done. Its lost and now we need to see how we can get back to Belgium. It was an ambush on the mood that we had so far in Croatia.
The very first step is to give a police complaint, we went to hostel and explained them what had happened and asked for help. We are so grateful to the staff that they called couple of stations to find out what can be done. They called a taxi and gave us details on where to go. we got the FIR copy after spending few hours in the station. The worrying part was that it was a saturday, sunday is a holiday for Indian Embassy in Zagreb which means we cannot take the flight that we had booked on Sunday. We got back to hostel With minds getting heavier unable to bear the change in the script. Well, the notorious us with the shittiest smirk that you can imagine told us that we have one more day in Zagreb to roam :P really!! But yeah....
Half past 12, we were sitting in the benches near the old town and having a pizza.
After a very emotionally draining day, oscilating between poles of excitment and worry, we went back to our capsules.

Woke up next day wishing the entire scene to be a dream. After a nice brunch, we covered Medvedgrad castle. We could get good 360 degree view of Zagreb and surrounding mountains. Spent good amount of time walking in the forest bushes and small streams.
Got a chance to lazy walk zagreb again and we wouldn't miss such an opportunity. Its not only about the check boxes that you tick against the places you visit but the strange guilt that you feel when you dont have enough time to spend in worthy places that makes you mad. We got time here. Day ended with a fine dine meal in food street.

Monday. We thanked hostel folks for their timely help and left for Indian Embassy. We thought the process would be easy. Offcials told that the document they give can be used only to go to India. This was a blow, a big blow.In our case we need to go to Belgium since we were working there. Tensions, calls, photographs, proofs, taxis, mindset to go to India, thought of going with the documents we have to Belgium....we were all over the place. After a lot of struggle, we got our temperory passport using which we can go to Belgium. We rocketed to the airport with just one hour left for the flight. As a tourist i hate to leave this country so soon, but given our situation, we rather get some how smuggled out of this place for now. Just before our minds slipping towards numbness, we were inside the fight laughing the situation out.
We reached Belgium and purchased on arrival visa to enter.

The entire Croatian footage would not get the liberty to fade in my memory and in time, when I recall, it would weigh rich than it is today.
Croatia has retained its pureness and resisted the onslaught of wild attitude that can be seen in other cities rather developing its artistic own cool.
It is like a song that grows on you as you listen to it.

Befriending Austria!!

There are cities where you want to go and visit but there arr very few cities or villages whr once you visit you feel like staying for a long time, Salzburg and Werfen were such places, I can recall that Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Berchtesgaden gave me similar feeling which is not too far from Salzburg.

Salzburg is special for many reasons. There was no big plan, I packed my bag and left to Salzburg alone from Herzogenaurach -  solo trip. Solo trip was so enriching in so many different ways that I decided to go alone for many trips there after. The train from Erlangen was at 10-45 in the night to Nuremberg, and a 11-30 train to Munich from Nuremberg.
I had to spend the night in Munich train station until morning 7. I spent the time in burger king drinking coffee. I had company of a student from Frankfurt chatting until dawn, she was travelling to Vienna.
M-train it was, starting from Munich to Salzburg. It was summer of 2016, so grasslands smiled brightly as the train made its way alongside Alps. I would have stayed without blinking my eyes if I could, but I couldn't.

Train route

Befriending the country side of German Austrian borders and chatting with an old couple who were going to Salzburg for n-teenth time, this was an epic 2 hours of ride. The trip was so satisfying even before I reached Salzburg.

German Austrian Border

Train route

At around 9,  I reached Salzburg. The plan was to go to Werfen after breakfast which is an hour's ride from Salzburg. Just when I thought I had seen some unbelievable scenic views, I was given more to feel mesmerized. A perfect train circuit which runs brushing hills on one side and river flowing ferociously separating us from the giant mountains on the other.

On the way to Werfen

Even if you had special powers to create a place, we might fall short to what I had witnessed. The river was running towards us as train goes deeper into the nature's basket. The route was pureness at its best. Damn!!
Unbelievable beauty

There were some pockets of houses far where my eyes curiously spotted.  I envy those people, living in such a paradise.

I reached Werfen, the bus stop to Eisriesenwelt is just outside the train station. The shuttle arrived and there were couple of people who boarded with me.
Werfen is a cute little hamlet boasting pristine views as shuttle took us up the steep winding narrow roads. You can spot Hohenwerfen fortress clamped on top of a hill with imposing beauty.

HohenWerfen Fortress

From the valleys you rise above clouds in a 20 minute ride to the entrance of Eisriesenwelt. We need to buy tickets here, it includes the cable car ride and entrance charge to ice caves.

Ticket Office

Walk for 20 mins absorbing staggering views of Alps to reach cable car. It then takes you high up flushing us out towards the path leading to the cave. It's another 20 minute climb to the cave in the Alps.

It was a sunny day, a perfect view of ice perched on top of mountains, river looking like tiny threads that you can spot way below, an artistic backdrop of azure sky. Moving inch by inch I found myself in front of world's largest ice cave.
Surreal!!

The path that I took to the cave

The Entrance

The guides take us inside in batches of 15 or 20. We were given tiny lanterns as there would be absolutely no light inside. The Ice cave is 42 kms long and we would be visiting the first 2 kms. We were welcomed by a huge gust pushing us out as we entered the cave. There were around 20 people in my batch moving in a single line and I was standing in last just before a Russian mother who was with her 2 kids. She had one lantern for 3, I called one of kids to come with me and the little girl sprang to hold my hand, cuteness overloaded. The line was moving in one pace and you know kids, they have their own pace.
Temperature inside cave is always low and my hands started to freeze. Guide explained details of the cave and the icy structures present in different locations of the cave. They were uniquely beautiful, I don't think we can find such a thing anywhere else, It is a different world altogether. Water dripping from top of the mountain with cold winds solidifying them gives them ever changing formations. It was as If there were frozen waterfalls, frozen mountains in the cave. Unfortunately taking photographs is not allowed, but the experience is such that we can never forget the formations that we see. I came out of the cave thanking the guide to a much friendly temperature.

Tracing the same path back,  I reached the ticket office. I had a slow peaceful lunch at the restaurant there and descended back to train station in the shuttle.

I was back to Salzburg by 4-30, still having some time in the day to cover few places.
I quickly took a shower and left the hostel to visit Mirabell gardens, pedestrian bridges which had love locks and markets in old town. It didn't take long to fall in love with Salzburg, a very touristy charming little city.

Long Stretch of Markets in old town

I returned to hostel to watch Euro cup match between Austria and Portugal,  plenty of people in front of a giant screen creating heated atmosphere, with dinner in front of me,  ah that was lovely. It was a tiring day with great content and satisfaction.

With some more places to cover I started early next day. Ice, the law student who was in my room joined me. She was from Thailand, studying in Italy.
First stop - Hohensalzburg castle. Beautifully placed, with long history, this castle gave us terrific views of the city. Close to it are Mozartplatz , house number 9 Mozart's birth place and the Cathedral.
HohenSalzburg

View from HohenSalzburg

The beauty of the route to Helbrunn palace was arresting. For the last stretch of 2 kms the walking trial had trees on both sides forming a green cave, I fell hopelessly in love with it. By evening we had our list covered.

Arresting nature

Austria is one of the prettiest countries I have ever seen. It is serene and unruffled like no other. Nature is untamed here ensuring psychedelic calmness. Be sure to make place for Austria in your list, it will make a huge place in your heart.

Pour some Greece in my Diary!!

I love Greece. Every inch of Greece is beautiful and not just beautiful, it's jaw dropping, mind blowing beautiful. Greece is naturally blessed with oceanic landscapes having wow triggering views.
There are 100's of islands in Greece that entices you. Well we had time to cover Athens, Santorini and Crete.

Western civilization took Birth in Greece. It is really special to simply stand in a place like Athens and realize that Greek kings had walked here, history indeed is marvelous. Acropolis is as majestic as it stood 1000's of years back. The important sites like Temple of Zeus, ancient Agora and Parthenon are close to each other and can be covered by foot. You can observe ancient ruins all over the area around acropolis.

Acropolis-Night View

Plaka needs a special mention for its old, lazy and fun filled shopping area. There are some beautifully laid out restaurants on the steps in the way between Plaka and acropolis. I would recommend a dinner here, for there are live music and delicious authentic Greek food.
We sat somewhere in the left top corner

Swing the pendulum of the clock to meet the night and we were in Santorini. The most famous cities and places in the world would be quite different from what is expected out of it, but Santorini is a place which feeds your imagination more than what it was capable of.
Santorini is a small island with few villages spread  throughout it. We rented a car which I honestly feel is a great idea because there are plenty of stops you would want to take to get fabulous views of the island.
We started next morning, exploring the island with our open top beetle and made our way to Perissa beach.

Driving in the island

As I said, We did take 100's of Stops when ever and where ever we wanted to. The island gives you a chance to realize how beautiful earth really is. Perissa is black sand beach with a wonderful backdrop, a perfect one for summer.

Pic Perfect Perrissa

Running on the shore

We started to the lighthouse which is towards the center of the island. The color of the ocean and the landscape kissing it, is perhaps nature's easiest seductive act which forces you to stop and take pictures over and over again.

One of those stops
n-teenth stop

The scenic marvel around light house and  the cliff giving us enough view and space to place our self at the edge desire is deeply satisfying.

Edge Of Desire

We made our way to fira, a slightly crowded village where most of shopping could be done. Fira has lovely winding paths with old architecture.
Fira

Fira

The pics and postcards that you see of Santorini is the place called Oia pronounced as ee-ya. Well, whatever hype and expectations you have about Oia, I'm pretty sure the place for real will surpass it.
Chasing the sunset is one activity not to be missed.  It's not only about sunset, but the transition of colors in Oia before sunset and after sunset. It is surreal,  it really is.

Before Sunset

After Sunset

The small curvy paths,  artistic shops, old churches,  blue domes,  white washed buildings,  restaurants and the view of the sea makes us an easy prey for its beauty. Although leaving this island was a pain, for the relationship between us was truly special,  I'm pretty sure We will meet again.

Next day's sunrise was in Crete. Crete is a large island with plenty of villages and pretty beaches. There are 2 airports, one at each end of the island.  We landed at one end if the island and booked a flight from the other end of the island, our plan was to drive through this wonderful island exploring villages and beaches.
We rented a car and started to one of the most weirdest beaches I have ever seen, Seitan Limania.
Seitan Limania

There r many beaches around the world I have seen,  but what makes this one special is the path that we take and sheer magnitude of beauty that We experience. The road, as we get close to the beach is very steep with plenty of bends. I can assure you that every bend will throw a sight that is probably not available in any other part of the world. As you descend slowly you can spot a patch of opening of cliffs and ocean invading these spaces, you realize that beach is getting close to you.The staggering view is such that you run short of words to lavishly praise it.
Watch this video in you tube, the road is much more wonderful and scary than what you see but it gives you a fair idea about it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q58lLrkQSTc

From the car park, you need to walk down the cliff in front of you to experience this unique tranquility.
It's a small beach with no restaurants nearby,  so make sure to bring some refreshments.
We spent some time and left to explore the rest of island, we stopped at many random beaches for which we don't even know the names. The best decision we took was to drive, cos throughout the path we had deep blue ocean at one end and forest, grasslands on the other.
Random pic during drive

It was a typical tropical dream destination that one could imagine of. Next village which we wanted to stop was Rethymnon. I simply loved this village cos it's so peaceful and calm.  There is a castle here surrounded by markets and beautiful colorful streets.
Drive beside Castle

Market In Rethymnon

We had a great time watching the sea shores and having a delightful lunch. We started driving again as this Greek island gracefully gave splendid views throughout.

I boarded the flight and felt as if I'm moving away from nature. Greece has been a soul stirring experience.
You can shout out some of other popular names around the world,  but nothing impressed me as much as Greece. Even to this day when I recall about Greece or look at pictures I had taken, I really wonder if I saw those with my eyes and if such places actually exist on earth. Greece added more peace to my soul and more meaning to my travel mission.

The Spain Serendipity!! [Part 2]

An island that allures ones soul occupies such a less space in the world map that you may probably ignore its existence. Ibiza makes us chase the warmth that flutters in the Balearic breeze constantly. It makes your wrinkles vanish and thrust your soul to be younger than present. It has so many layers that people fail to peel each layer and grasp its true identity. May be that's the mysterious beauty that this island can allude.

We had a long night waiting in Valencia airport for our flight to Ibiza.
We rented a car in Ibiza airport. Since we were driving in Europe for the first time, we started with expected and unexpected thrills in the island.
who doesn't have a dream of waking up to a seashore/beach? Our hotel made this dream come true,  it faced the sea giving us more reasons to cheer about.

We started our trip through the island. The scent of wild beauty is sprinkled all over, each part of the island is dramatically different.
The next big adventure is waiting to gobble us!! On the shores of Mediterranean, a small hut with exciting people, invited us with smiles. As i went into the hut, i took a small gaze back at the sea, It looked fascinatingly humongous. A blend of fear and fun ran through me when subconsciously my mind was telling me, i do not know how to swim.
We were given instructions on how to breath, basic signals underwater and about our equipment. we started to make our way to the blue enigma.
24 hrs ago i fell from sky, now i'm going to be engulfed by Mediterranean. As i was crawling towards the endless sea in front of me, the shore moved slowly away from me, getting my heart to pump faster. we dragged ourselves underwater, although instructors were there somewhere near us, it was all about our effort here. Something that i have been doing from my birth, looked very tricky and i had to do it very consciously....Breathing!!
The kind of world beneath, the different plants, the sheer extra effort that we put in to move is magical. We were there in the middle somewhere for about an hour or so. Though my fantasy of meeting mermaids didn't happen, We came out as different souls, a much peaceful one indeed.
There is a wonderful silence which belongs to the blue world, Scuba diving made us experience it.

After a good lunch, we went to Cala conte on the other side of the island. The clear waters and sand, the surroundings, the small pockets of shores letting people lay is really amazing. I couldn't stop myself from running into the water and taking a bath. After the bath, We just sat there chatting and eating food for some hours.

Lot of people with books and their umbrellas,  kids and their sun screen creams, footballs and volley balls,  the beach was filled with so much fun.
Night was climbing, the far faint noise of music, people getting charged, colorful lights, the giggles....this is the place to be when the sun goes down.

We went to Pacha one of the best clubs,  it was one hell of a place.
Ibiza surely lived to the hype.

Sleepless night followed by an early morning flight saw us soon in Barcelona. From an island of such vigor to a busy city in just few hours was a drastic change that our mind consciously couldn't take. But anyways, we visited major attractions in the city. Not to forget the champions league finals that we watched in a hotel with dinner after our visit to the beach.
We came back from Spain with more color and character to our soul. It has added a beautiful little story in my diary that i would wish to read and experience again.
